Learn the basics of handbuilding in this 6 week beginner class! 

Classes begin May 24th

In this course, students will explore handbuilding basics through functional pottery. Students will have four projects incorporating pinch method, coil method, slab construction and soft slab draping. Students will have opportunities to apply surface decoration through stamps, underglaze application and sgrafitto. A glazing course will be provided on the last week and pieces will be fired and finished approximately two weeks after the last class day.

This course is built for true beginners and will give students the formational skills of handbuilding pottery!  

We will cover: 

- coil method 

- pinch method 

- soft slab draping 

- slab construction

 

We will learn these basics through four projects: 

- slab constructed box or lidded jar

- coil built vase 

- pinch tea cups with handles

- soft slab bowls/planters

 

Students will be provided with:

-clay

-all necessary tools

-firing services

We recommend bringing your own towels, rags, or aprons.

The class will meet weekly. The class will meet for 6 consecutive weeks beginning on the date listed, and access to studio work hours will last up to the final class meeting.  The wheel class includes 2hrs of group instruction per week, 6 hrs of studio work time per week, and access to all equipment and materials needed for handbuilding pottery. All firing, clay and tools for class projects are provided in the class.

All tools and clay are provided for class, but if you wish to have your own tool set you may purchase it here.

During open studio hours students must purchase their own clay, and will be allotted  firing service punch cards included with the class. Students may purchase more firing space for open studio hours as needed. Students may use studio tools and glazes during open studio hours. (This will all be explained in detail during the first class, don't worry. Most students don't have an issue staying under the allotted firing amount.)
